This full-throttle, 4 week intensive programme is an opportunity for you to sharpen essential skills the industry demands while building your portfolio with the intent propose of facing the professional environment knowing you have the skills required by the industry. With both theory and practical days, this master course will equip you with the expertise required to understand the different processes involved in filmmaking within the art department.

Your 4 weeks are scheduled to run as follows:

Week 1 – Art Department Essentials

  • Production Design
  • Script Breakdown & Budgeting
  • Working with a director / producer
  • Concept to reality
  • Draughting – elevations & plans
  • Model making scaled

Week 2 – Props Making Essentials

  • The Props Department
  • Sculpting props
  • Moulding
  • Casting
  • Painting & Finishing

Week 3 – Construction & Miniature Model Making

  • Design and scaling
  • Moulding and casting
  • Texture stamps
  • Making and dressing foliage (depending on the model)
  • Organic surface textures (eg rock faces)
  • Architectural surfaces (eg roof tiles, brickwork)
  • Practical lighting
  • Metal finishes
  • Wood finishes
  • Painting and artworking
  • Setting up model
  • Dressing to camera
  • Basic lighting techniques
  • Camera techniques for shooting miniatures convincingly 

Week 4 – Set Dressing & Professional Skills

  • Set Dressing & Design

Emerge from this mastercourse with an enhanced skillset and increased confidence knowing that you will have a broad understanding of how some of the most important areas of the art department operate at a high level, and what is expected from you when involved in a project.

Every week we will be bringing some of the most respected designers and technicians in the industry to spend time with you, telling you all about their skills, setting up practical hands-on exercises, and overviewing each participant is making the most out of their training time. Classes are kept small to ensure a successful 1:1 between tutors and participants.

Tours to some of the most recognised art department houses will be included in this 4 weeks.
